The lawn mower is always greener on the other side — unless you have a Ryobi and its recognizable neon green hue.

Ryobi, founded in Japan in 1943, is a manufacturer of seemingly everything home and DIY — from tools to lawn, car care and beyond. I was on the hunt for the "best lawn mower" that could work for most Canadian homes — my online research led me to Ryobi.
I contacted Ryobi and asked to try their lawn mowers. On behalf of homeowners across the country, I was looking for an affordable, high-quality mower that is easy to operate and maintain — and of course, one that could cut me a golf-course-worthy lawn. After cutting many-a-lawns I’ve come up with three different recommendations, based on yard size, mower (person not object) and budget.
All three of the lawn mowers are a part of Ryobi's 40V battery line. Ryobi has a few battery systems, including the 40V and 18V. These batteries are extremely versatile and can be used with 85 and 280 Ryobi products, respectively. Considering mowing laws can be labour-intensive, I prefer the 40V battery for extra oomph. However, if you have a really small patch of grass, perhaps an 18V option would suffice. All the mowers below are cordless, powerful and battery-operated.
For most homes: 40V HP Brushless 20-inch Battery Walk Behind Self-Propelled Mower ($598)For larger yards (just under an acre): 40V HP Brushless 21-inch Battery Self-Propelled AWD Mower ($1,197)For those who like manual mowers: 40V HP Brushless 20-inch Cordless Battery Walk Behind Push ($448)

Why buy: Some people love mowing their lawns and other people are like me. I like to keep the task as simple as possible. This machine is easy to maneuver because it's light (for what it is) and self-propelled. I like flicking a switch and directing the machine where to go. The self-propulsion almost gamifies cutting grass. I think Ryobi and fellow Japanese company, Nintendo, should collaborate and do some sort of virtual reality mowing game.
Until my lawn turns into a Mario Kart challenge, I really appreciate the ease of this option. It's the most accessible option because it's self-propelled, light and requires very little maintenance.

Why buy: This machine is ready for yards of all shapes and sizes. The best thing about this mower is its all-wheel drive capability. If you have dips, hills or slants in your yard, this mower is for you. I was easily able to mow down and up a hill without any trouble as the mower self-adjusts its speed.
It's a heavy-duty piece of equipment and just plain heavy. It's not too heavy by any means, but note that it does take some effort to pivot when changing directions. It's very powerful and can easily get through long grass. It's also part of the "Whisper Series" meaning it's quieter than other mowers of its power.

Why buy: For those who don't mind pushing their mower, this one's for you. It still has the same power as the self-propelled options above, it's just your energy that's doing the propelling. According to Ryobi reps, this is the most popular option that they’d recommend for most homes. However, I really like the self-propelled feature as I’m able to mow no matter how I’m feeling. But if I was a handy dandy person who loves yard and housework, I would opt for this one.
This model is about the same weight as the top option, which makes it easier to push.

This article focuses on Ryobi as it's the leader in cordless battery-operated lawn mowers. Battery-operated lawn mowers are generally quieter than gas options. However, if you’re in the market for a gas-powered mower, there are some great brands in that category that include Troy-Bilt and some great corded options like Greenworks.
